What Services Does the Library Provide

WELCOME

The BCC Library invites you to drop by the library to learn more about the Library’s services, print collection and on-line resources, to place materials on reserve, or to make recommendations for new library resources (books, videos, etc).  Librarians are available for consultation on the development of effective research assignments, subject or course specific information pathfinders, bibliographies, etc.  Please come by or email to arrange a library orientation.

CONSIDER INCLUDING THE LIBRARY IN YOUR COURSES

Your library is a partner in the instructional process. When developing new courses or revising existing courses or programs, the BCC Library would like to work with you to make sure our collection fully supports your students' learning.  With your collaboration, the library can most effectively identify available resources and work towards purchasing new materials that meet your and your students’ information needs.

BCC librarians are happy to work with you to provide the most effective learning resources to your students by purchasing (whenever possible) recommended resources, creating appropriate information guides, and providing training on library skills, research methods and information literacy whenever requested.

In the past, a FIG was conducted exploring the primary reasons why the majority of students in a first year U.S. history course lacked adequate research skills.  The investigation revealed that all of the students benefited from additional support in the library.  The question explored was what could be done to improve these skills with a library-instructor partnership.   Based on findings, it was concluded that students in research-oriented courses would benefit from curriculum that requires use of library resources and interactions with library staff.   Instructors in relevant courses would benefit from partnering with the BCC library before the start of each semester to develop library coursework that would improve student success in research-based assignments.   Please consider working with the library to include assignments that incorporates a library component.  Feel free to contact Joshua Boatright at jboatright@peralta.edu, Heather Dodge at hdodge@peralta.edu, or Jenny Yap at jyap@peralta.edu for assistance in designing such assignments.
